2026 Itinerary Brisbane to Alice Springs
20 Day Itinerary - Mount Moffat / Salvator Rosa / Hell Hole Gorge / Thompson River / Diamantina Lakes
This tour is designed to highlight Western Queensland’s out of the way National Parks. We travel west from Brisbane or east from Alice Springs depending on the season. Travelling west, towards Alice Springs, we head through outback towns such as Chinchilla, Mitchell, Augathella, Tambo, Quilpe and Windorah in the heart of channel country. Remote from major towns, this tour visits National Parks including the Mount Moffat and Salvator Rosa, in the remoter parts of Carnarvon NP, Idalia, Hell Hole Gorge, Lark Quarry, Lochern and Diamantina Lakes. There are many walks to be done exploring each location and photographic opportunities exist at every turn as this area is abundant with wildlife especially birds. The remoteness of this tour is special and the country is amazing.
Day 1 - Leaving Brisbane we head west out past Towoomba heading for Chinchilla.
Day2 - We travel further west through Roma and on to Carnarvon NP - Mount Moffat section .
Day 3 - Walking and exploring the Mount Moffat area.
Day 4 - Travelling to Mitchell to look around this historic old town.
Day 5 - We head for Augathella on the Warrego River before heading back into the Carnarvon NP Salvator Rosa section.
Day 6 - Walking and exploring the Salvator Rosa section.
Day 7 - A mornings drive into Tambo and the afternoon restocking supplies.
Day 8 - We travel to Idalia NP then do an afternoon walk
Day 12 - Windorah is our next stop before heading on to the Mayne River.
Day 9 - A mornings walk before travelling to Hell Hole Gorge NP.
Day 10 - Walking, swimming and exploring in Hell Hole Gorge NP.
Day 11 - We head for Quilpie, famous for it’s boulder opal.
Day 16 - A free day in Boulia to discover the Min Min Experience Centre and the local museums.
Day 13 - We visit Lark Quarry NP to see the Dinosaur footprints in this area on our way to Diamantina NP.
Day 14 - Walking and exploring Diamantina NP.
Day 15 - Into Boulia with an afternoon to relax on the Burke River.
Day 17 - We head for the Northern Territory border and Tobermorey Station.
Day 18 - We travel the Plenty Highway to the Mac & Rose Chalmers Conservation Reserve.
Day 19 - Walking and Exploring the Reserve’s remarkable granite outcrops.
Day 20 - We head for Alice Springs arriving mid afternoon.
Itineraries may change depending on local circumstances such as NP access, weather or road conditions
